Selena Gomez's 'Boyfriend' Lyrics Reflect Dating Struggle

Selena Gomez's 'Boyfriend'

After a long wait and much hype, this morning Selena Gomez dropped the single "Boyfriend" with the release of her album Rare's deluxe version.

"Boyfriend" is a true interpretation of the challenges that come with dating — wanting more and finding the right guy even though you're content alone. It is a mood, while one Gomez admits it has been dated. When she revealed that her album's deluxe edition was coming out, she cautioned that "Boyfriend" no longer reflects her dating stance, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Many of you know how excited I’ve been to release a song called 'Boyfriend,'" she posted on her Instagram Story Monday. "It’s a lighthearted song about falling down and getting back up time and time again in love, but also knowing that you don’t need anyone other than yourself to be happy."



Gomez first teased "Boyfriend" in January during her interview with Jimmy Fallon. Her album co-writers Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter also talked a little bit about the roots of the album in Gomez's profile of WSJ news, published back in January. When they wrote songs Michaels said,
